The acquisition of the ISP alginate, food blends and PGA (propylene glycol alginate) business by FMC Corporation was finalized August 18, 2008. The new combined business is positioned, better than ever, to provide new and existing customers with deep product and applications knowledge, strengthened sales and technology teams and a reliable, cost-efficient global operations network. We are committed to providing you with the same exceptional service and high quality products to which you are accustomed.
Thorverk's main shareholder and customer recently completed several major capital investment projects at it's alginate factory at Girvan in Scotland. Said Richard Searle, Manager of International Seaweed Resources for ISP, “ISP has recently completed multi million dollar investments at it's Girvan factory to improve quality, efficiency and environmental controls. This is not only good news for the future of the Girvan factory but also for it's main raw material suppliers. This includes Thorverk which has long been recognised as a particularly important supplier of high quality seaweed meal. Thorverk remains a key supplier for the future which is looking brighter than it has for quite a number of years“.

Thorverk hf, the seaweed meal manufacturer, received Organic Certification on Monday, June 14 th 1999. It is the certification agency TÚN ehf. which certifies Thorverk's production. TÚN is also an inspection agent for the American certification agency Quality Assurance International (QAI) which will allow Thorverk to use its logo. From now on Thorverk's products will be labeled Organic using the TÚN logo and QAI.
This is the first time an Icelandic seaweed product has been certified Organic. This certification confirms that Thorverk fulfils the strictest international standards for sustainability, separation of raw material, traceability of products and contamination control at all stages of the production process. With 25 years experience of harvesting seaplants from the natural resources of Breidafjordur, supported by scientific research, Thorverk can now look forward to further sales demand.
Bill Wolf, USA organic industry spokesman, comments to Thorverk hf. organic certification: “I am very pleased. Thorverk is now the only commercial producer of certified kelps for organic agriculture. TÚN inspection certifies the organic site of the harvest in Breidafjordur, and the sustainability, cleanliness and integrity of the process for this superior product.“
Halldor Sigurdsson, General Manager, says: “This is an important opportunity which will help strengthen Thorverk as a company. Thorverk's products are already sold to customers in many countries and “Organic“ status will help develop new sales opportunities. Highest quality products certified as produced from an unspoiled environment in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner is what we want to guaranty our customers. Thorverk's existence is all about how successful we will be in fulfilling our customers needs and wants.“
