Process

There is no surface oxidation or browning of particles as often seen in oil or coal\-dried product and of course there are no products of combustion carried by the air into the product, thanks to the plant's geothermal heat exchanger. The geothermal water comes from three boreholes, each 1.000 m. deep, located closed to the factory and enters the plant at ~110°C and heats the drying air of 400.000 m3/hour.

The rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) is harvested mechanically on the littoral shore, while Kelp (Laminaria digitata) is harvested by a coaster equipped with a dredge. The weed is brought to the plant in the coaster at the end of each day and landed.

The drying process is mild, with air temperatures not exceeding 85°C and heat in the material considerably lower than that. The drying time for seaweeds is 2\-3 hrs. and under these conditions all the organic and biologically active substances ascribed to seaweeds are preserved intact. The dried material is milled, sieved, packed and stored.

Thorverk produces organic certified high quality seaweed meal and distributes it all around the world.
